Our thesis is that if we can engage patients who typically only seek care in crisis—and support them through a longer-term recovery—we can improve outcomes and reduce both behavioral and medical readmissions.
SUN Positioning:
SUN was founded on the belief that access to behavioral health care is too often scarce, fragmented, and difficult to navigate—and that creative solutions exist to build services and fill those gaps in care.
Our name, SUN, stands for Solving Unmet Needs, a daily reminder of our mission to expand access to care for individuals and families in crisis.
We’ve built four hospitals from the ground up to meet urgent community needs. These hospitals have delivered lifesaving care to thousands of patients while relieving pressure on emergency rooms, first responders, schools, and other overwhelmed systems of care.
But access alone isn’t enough.
While we’re proud to be a safe and supportive place for patients in crisis, we’ve seen firsthand how difficult it can be for patients to successfully transition into community-based care. Even when services are available, engagement with a post-acute provider often does not happen until a personal connection is created.
That’s why SUN is now extending its mission beyond the hospital walls. Our home- and community-based services support the same populations—across age, diagnosis, and payor profiles—as our hospitals.
The work being done at our community-based agencies is extraordinary and we want to bring it to the patients in our hospitals, particularly those who seem to find services only when they’re in crisis.
Where we have geographic overlap, we are redesigning our care model to support patients across months and years, not just days or weeks. For those with the highest needs, we aim to build trust, foster engagement, and support recovery in the least restrictive environment.
Our hospitals remain a critical component of the continuum as many patients begin their journey in crisis and without support, too many return to crisis again and again. We are determined to break that cycle.
When patients are actively engaged in treatment, they are healthier—and they use far fewer healthcare services. Patients utilizing behavioral health services make up about 25% of the total population, but account for 60% of healthcare spending. Yet less than 15% of that spend is on behavioral health care itself. Critically, when patients engage in community-based services both behavioral and medical crisis services are reduced.
SUN’s full continuum of care has the potential to reduce the total cost of care while improving lives. For our patients. For their families. And for our payor partners
