What are the Advantages & Benefits of Telehealth?

The term “telehealth services” is known by quite a few names. From electronic communications to telemental health or telemedicine, these services all mean the same thing. You can access medical benefits by phone or electronically over the internet in real-time. These telehealth sessions offer identical quality care, just as you receive in person. There are a few reasons why telehealth is possibly superior to standard in-person care and improves the quality of doctor-patient interactions.

    • You have access to care, no matter where you live. All you need is a phone line or internet connection.
    • Patients with disabilities that cause limited mobility have no barrier to accessing care.
    • Clients receive timely care. Drs can assess situations and decide if an ER, urgent care, or Primary Care Physician (PCP) visit is appropriate.
    • Telehealth empowers elders to retain their full independence by not needing to call for services
to get to an appointment, eliminating travel time.

Not to mention the fact with telehealth technologies, there are zero risks of exposure to contagious disease or risk of further spreading of any conditions.

Who Should You Use Telemedicine Mental Health Services?

    Students:

A student in need of a specialist may have a prolonged wait, or if their school is in a rural medical desert, they may not have access to specialists. A young woman from Wilmington reported, “I was so pleased I was able to keep the therapist I had since high school when I went off to college. It would have been so hard for me to try to reconnect with a new therapist local to my school.” Continuity of care is another reason to turn to telemedicine.

    Parents:

Mother’s can’t stop raving about the benefits of telemedicine. If a flu bug strikes a family and everyone from dad to the baby are all suffering some horrific symptoms, it’s easy enough to schedule back to back to back behavioral health appointments for the whole family. Mom and Dad don’t have to fight their own symptoms to drive the family in, and no one at the office is exposed.

    Anyone with a job:

Under previous circumstances, if you had a therapy session appointment, you would have to beg for time off work. If you had no sick time or personal time, you’d have to miss hours from work. Or schedule a visit in the evening after work, if possible -neither at your convenience nor preference.

    Anyone with mental health needs:

Telemedicine seeks to solve a multitude of issues, especially for those that have not felt like themselves recently. Before, if there were a lack of therapists or counselors in your area, you were forced to travel to find a mental health professional that met your needs. Thanks to telecommunications technologies to support all healthcare services, we have seen a burst of new possibilities and a broader scope of remote connections between providers and clients.
